Mark Ritts

Mark Ritts (1946 - 2009)

Best known for his role on Beakman's World as Lester the Rat, and on PBS's Storytime as Kino, Mark Ritts was also, and foremost, a loving husband, devoted and beloved father, and dear friend. For two years, Mark has courageously battled kidney cancer, never wanting to burden those close by. We are profoundly sad to see him go, but are relieved that his suffering is over.

On behalf of Mark, we thank you for your love, support, and friendship through the years.

We ask that flowers not be sent, but please leave your words in the Guest Book below - we look forward to reading your messages, wishes, and stories.

Private messages to the family can be sent from the Contact Page. If you have any pictures you would like to share with us, please let us know.

The memorial service will be a private event for close friends and family only. (details soon)

Thank you.

The Ritts Family

    • You are missed!! You played a wonderful character on Beakman's World and also in life!!!

    • Lester the rat was undoubtedly a strong influence for me as a child, and that influence will by with me forever. I'm really shocked to know Mr. Ritts died, a great loss really. Beakman's World was a great show, with a great social responsibility and Mr. Ritts was a very important piece in the show. I'm sure his work transcended in the life of many when kids all over the world. We we'll remember him always. He was the greatest man that could have ever dressed up like a lab rat. Lester, wherever you are, you will always be with us.

    • Acabo de enterarme que Mark partio y realmente me entristecio mucho. Me hizo reir mucho! Un abrazo grande a su familia...

    • I Grew up with his work as Lester The rat. I am a Medicine student now, a science man. He had a huge influence in my life. I regret deeply that he's gone. My condolences

    • Rest in Peace. I will miss you to much. So many times you made me smile and laugh, as Lester the giant lab rat. And now, I'm sad because I found out that that you are gone.

    • It was great to see him on TV every day, always hoped that he win the challenge ... and, ah, that's just one of the many and various things he did in his life. Well, your physical body may be gone , but always be alive in our minds and hearts.

    • I feel like I'm long overdue for a comment. I remember first meeting Mark on a trip to Disneyland James invited me on when I was a young teen. Meeting friends' parents was always sort of intimidating, being so shy, so I was a little nervous about it. Dads especially have a tendency to come off the stern disciplinarian. So my first memory of Mark was entering the car and literally the moment I saw him being put at ease. He instantly came across as such a happy, joyous person, and that carried through all the time I knew him.

It's been years since I've seen him, and I'm dreadfully sorry for that. He was an absolutely wonderful man. My best to all the family.

    • Fue uno de los idolos de mi infancia, me pone muy tristee que se halla ido, pero al menos dejo de sufrir... Mi pesame para su familia...
